Kerbal Space Progam, Spotlight on the Community - Modding Edition
by Chad
Games with robust modding support have always been at the top of my favorite titles list. I remember playing KSP in the early days, and craving more and more parts to add to the experience. Luckily for me, KSP had some of the best support for modding that I had seen in a game.
That support has only grown in subsequent releases. The earliest versions allowed for simple editing of configuration files, and the loading of completely custom 3d models. Today, we have a robust part creation toolkit that integrates directly into the indy version of Unity and supports all manner of modern mapping techniques. Modders are coupling these new tools with a fully featured coding system of plugins, that allow the community to create fully interactive parts with their own custom coded behaviors in C#.
An excellent example of a plugin based mod, is the Robotics Pack Plugin by DYJ. It features all the crazy servos, hinges, trusses, and robotic bits you could ask for in a mod. This opens up a whole new world of building in KSP, allowing you to make massive crawling spider bots, or complex folding aircraft with ease.

An Example creation, using parts from the Robotics Pack.
You can find this mod, and many more in the “Addon Releases and Projects Showcase” over at the KSP forums.

After you’ve created your masterpiece of Kerbal Engineering, you can post it in the “Spacecraft exchange” to share with the rest of the community! I’m always looking forward to seeing the interesting things our players come up with!
Happy Launching!
